I have actually recently been apart of the Wild Outside Program which is an incredible initiative as a part of the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF). This is a program open to all highschool students aged 15 to 18, focused on engaging youth toward conservation activities. What I would like to highlight the most about this program is that it gives highschool students many opportunities to become more connected in nature. This is done through various team building and outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking (which were by far my favorite excursions!) but there are also so many more! In addition to the outdoor activities, there are many opportunities to learn about relevant conservation projects around your area such as bird migration, habitat restoration, and engaging in citizen science. This program is year round and offers many opportunities for youth to stay connected to nature from the warmest of months to the coldest!

If you are a highschool student interested in conservation, this is the program for you. Some events completed within this program can also count towards your volunteer hours! The best thing about this program is that anyone with an interest and passion for conservation can apply and it is also a simple process which can be done on their site. You will be lead by two very passionate leaders alongside fellow highschool students, which is another great way to make friends! Though there may be waiting lists, you are guaranteed to have an incredible experience working alongside like minded people and learn how to make a difference in your community.
I have met so many incredible people through this program and though my time will soon come to an end as I turn 19, I have valued all the experience and knowledge I've gained.
Currently, the wild outside program is taking place in many provinces in Canada, be sure to take a look at their website to learn more and check to see if there is a group near you!
Be sure to take a look at their social media platforms as well!
The more that we, as youth understand the importance of biodiversity and conservation in our local areas, the better equip we are to create a change towards efforts of conservation.
Because Together, We Can Make a Difference
